More companies are reintroducing in-office work, with high-profile Canadian organizations like Amazon.com and Telus Communications scaling back their work-from-home policies.
Major employers have scaled back remote work, with Stellantis NV bringing employees back to the office due to profit concerns. Federal public service employees are now required to work three days per week, while executives are to be in the office four days a week. Amazon.com Inc. has reverted to working from the office five days a week, while Telus Corp. ordered around 1,000 call center workers back to the office for three days a week. Some employees in Barrie, Ontario, were told to move to Montreal or accept a severance package due to the sale of their previous office space.
In Toronto, which has the fewest in-office workers of six major cities worldwide, Mayor Olivia Chow met with downtown executives to discuss bringing employees back more frequently. However, Chow later backtracked on her stance, stating that it’s up to employers and workers to determine what’s best for returning to in-office work.
This raises questions about why some companies are eager to scale back their remote work policies and if working from home (WFH) is a dying trend.
